ABC 7 News - Broadband makes tiny town an English-teaching hub - The nearest Wal-Mart is two hours away, and only foul weather, a deer in the road or a Washakie County sheriff's deputy would slow down anyone with a mind to drive there faster

InterCall Blog: The Future of Teleworkers

# Today there are over 28 million teleworkers, according to a recent survey by the International Telework Association and Council. # Telework grew considerably in the U.S., from 30 percent of organizations saying they offered it to employees in 2007 to 42 percent in 2008, according to WorldatWork. # The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates that by 2012, the population of teleworkers (full and part time) will grow to up to 100 million.

The Growing Role of IT Departments in Corporate Green Strategies

The Growing Role of IT Departments in Corporate Green Strategies

The IT department may seem an unlikely place to find motivated environmentalists. But that is precisely where many private-and public-sector organizations will find teams driving critical climate-change initiatives. Taking on an eco-sustainability role, however, does carry some interesting implications. For one thing, IT staffs will have to develop new skills and perspectives about the role technology can play in advancing environmental objectives. In addition to delivering high levels of technical performance and aligning their activities with key business objectives, they will have to learn the language and the logic of sustainable growth

The idea that twenty-somethings have to commute an hour plus each way to an office and work eight hours a day in a cubicle seems absurd to them. As they become the work force, expect the days of the cubicle to become numbered.

Toshiba ISD commissioned a survey of 600 managers and employees across Australia and New Zealand about their attitudes towards flexible work. The report entitled 'Mobility and Mistrust' found that: * More than 50 per cent of respondents think that managers are less trusting of flexible workers and nearly 75 per cent think employees disapprove of their colleagues who sometimes work away from the office; * In non flexible workplaces 75 per cent of managers said they would be unlikely to let employees work flexibly, even though 50 per cent of employees would like to, if allowed; * The main obstacle to the uptake of flexible working arrangements is the perceived difficulty in monitoring and supervising employees, with 65 per cent of managers and 59 per cent of employees citing this problem. This indicates scope for performance rather than attendance based evaluation techniques in order to increase trust; * Managerial support of flexible work arrangements is important. Only 26 per cent of flexible workplaces had policies in place, and most of these applied to individuals rather than across the organisation; * The report identifies the issues of organisational culture and the need for managerial and co-worker support, in the implementation of flexible work practices.

A survey of mobility: Working from anywhere | Labour movement | The Economist

A survey of mobility: Working from anywhere | Labour movement | The Economist

Rutgers' Mr Katz argues that the “frenzy is only going to get worse.” This is, first, because of “random reinforcement”, the desultory pattern of rewards that comes with addictive behaviours such as gambling. A CrackBerry winnows through his e-mail throughout the day, knowing full well that most of it is chaff, but cannot help himself because of that occasional grain. The second reason, says Mr Katz, is that most people suffer from the illusion that more information always leads to better decisions, and there is always more information available on our phones and laptops. The third reason is that “people today need to do constant impression-management,” because the mere ability to stay connected during weekends, vacations or sabbaticals means that going offline risks reminding others that we are expendable.

Remote Workforce Presentation

Remote Workforce Presentation

With the technology becoming increasingly mobile, it offers a more flexible diverse workforce, and the office structure must be aligned to support this effort. • Going from full time office support, a culture shift will evolve to manage the change curve to an improved self service workforce. • In a global remote workforce, there will be a need to formulate team hubs in order to maintain an effective and engaged organization. • Utilization of the latest technology will be first and foremost to attain the highest level of self-service, as well as realize the cost saving efforts in mov- ing toward interactive office space

IT Conversations | Accelerating Change | Thomas W. Malone (Free Podcast)

Changes in technology and in how information is shared both further and faster are transforming how organizations operate. Thomas Malone, of the MIT Sloan School of Management, shows how the changes in organizational structure mirror changes in how human society has organized and operated. His presentation illustrates that these changes can be primarily tied by a single factor, the cost of communication, and he presents present-day examples to show what the organization of the future may look like.
